About our hides
The deer hides are tanned using traditional brain tanning methods which incorporate the animal’s brain, metal, and bone tools purchased from Indigenous tool makers, smoke from rotted deciduous trees and many hours of physical and at times grueling work. There are no chemicals involved in our brain tanning process (commercially tanned hides undergo some chemical treatments). The hides are handcrafted, all-natural and made through focus, hard work, and Indigenous wisdom. Currently, no electric-powered tools are used in their hide tanning process. Hunter and Biizii work with deer hides from the Southern Georgian Bay, Lake Couchiching, Lake Erie and Thames River regions.
Everything is done by hand, with care.
About our hide tanners
Since 2015, Hunter has been learning the foundations of traditional hide tanning both independently and with guidance from Dene, Cree, Metis and Anishinaabe teachings shared with them by knowledge carriers. In 2020, Hunter taught their partner Biizii how to brain tan deer hide from start-to-finish. They now tan hides at home together. They focus on deer hide and are learning about moose hide tanning. Hunter and Biizii have had the honour of attending 4 different Indigenous hide tanning camps since 2019. In 2019, Hunter attended Lutsel k'e Hide Tanning Camp in North West Territories where they had the opportunity to learn about moose hide tanning with Dene women. In 2019 Hunter and Biizii attended the Moose River Basin (MRB) Hide Camp in Ontario with Melaw Nakehk'o and Mandee MacDonald; founding members of Dene Nahjo. In 2020, they attended Okimaw Kihew Mekwanak (OKM)'s Moose Hide Camp with Brian and Paulette Bird in Alberta. In 2021, they attended Nimkii Azhibikong's Hide Tanning Camp in Ontario. Hunter and Biizii have learned so much through attending Indigenous hide camps and have so much gratitude for the knowledge sharing that they have been part of at hide camps.
Hunter and Biizii are founders and facilitators for a new hide tanning initiative - called Niizh Manidook Hide Camp (NMHC) - a Hide Tanning Camp for Two-Spirit / 2SLGBTQIA+ community based in Southern Ontario. Funded by Ontario's Trillium Fund's Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF). Through YOF they have taught 5 youth apprentices about traditional deer hide tanning since 2020 to help transfer the skill! In summer 2022 NMHC will be hosting a hide camp in Moraviantown prioritizing Two Spirit youth from the surrounding reserves.
